Canadian Going to the United States

As of June 1, 2009, Canadians and residents must present one of the following documents when crossing the United States border by land.

  1. Valid Passport – please note that Canadian Citizens under the age of 16 years of age must only present either an original or photocopied birth certificate or an original citizenship card.
  2. Nexus Card
  3. Free and Secure Trade Card (FAST card)
  4. An enhanced driver's licence (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC) from a province where a U.S.-approved EDL/EIC program has been implemented
  5. Secure Certificate of Indian Status

Allowances

Every Canadian resident going to the U.S.A., for a trip of 48 hours or more, may buy at IGL and BHTE Duty Free Shops:

  • Every Canadian resident going to the U.S.A., for a trip of 48 hours or more, may buy at IGL and BHTE Duty Free Shops:
  • 1 carton of 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or cigarillos or 200g of tobacco or 200 tobacco sticks
  • Plus other merchandise for personal use

If the total amount of goods purchased at the IGL and BHTE Duty Free shops exceeds the duty free exemption, you may have to pay a minimal amount of duty at U.S customs upon entering the United States.

All goods bought at the IGL and BHTE Duty Free shops can be consumed in the U.S. or brought back to Canada after a 48- hour stay or more. All purchases must be declared at both the United States Customs as well as Canadian Customs upon return.

Every Canadian Resident returning from a trip in the United States may qualify for a personal exemption of:

  • CDN$50 on all types of goods – except tobacco products and alcoholic beverages – after each absence of 24 hours or more.
  • CDN$400 on all types of goods – including tobacco products and alcoholic beverages – after each absence of 48 hours or more.
  • CDN$750 on all types of goods – including tobacco products and alcoholic beverages – after each absence of 7 days or more.
